Hundreds of years ago, barbers served as surgeons in communities, with bloodletting as one of their main chores. Now, however, a new professional under the phlebotomist career is tasked to collect blood to ease the workload of doctors and nurses.
A phlebotomist career requires collecting blood through venipuncture (through veins) and storing it for laboratory tests or blood donations. Once blood is collected, a phlebotomist must also know how to test it and later analyze the results.
In the United States, phlebotomists sometimes also collect and test urine as Dialysis Technicians. The phlebotomist career revolves around hospitals, laboratories, clinics, blood banks, etc. Phlebotomists are often a part of the laboratory team. While they are normally taught to draw from veins, they may also be trained to collect blood samples from arteries.
Years ago, the phlebotomist career was simply learned by medical practitioners on the job. There were no courses specifically about phlebotomy then. Today, since the phlebotomist career is becoming more recognized, one can learn it through studying in phlebotomist career centers or trade schools for a couple of months.
The students who want to have a phlebotomist career are taught cardiopulmonary resuscitation and most importantly, the anatomy of the human body.
As expected, a phlebotomist must be able to handle blood and human fluids being squeamish. Depending on the state or country, to be employed in a phlebotomist career, one may need to be certified by a national association like the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) that offers Phebotomy Technician certification in the United States.
The phlebotomist career is considered to be in high demand based on the annual report of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. In countries like the USA, those in the phlebotomist career receive good or competitive pay. They also have a very flexible schedule where it is sometimes up to them to choose their preferred hours of work.
